What is the Year 4 MTC?

The Multiplication Tables Check (MTC) is a statutory assessment taken by all Year 4 pupils in England each June. Children answer 25 questions on screen, with 6 seconds per question, covering all times tables from 2× to 12×. Questions involving 6×, 7×, 8×, 9× and 12× appear more frequently because they are the hardest for most children.

Regular practice with timed worksheets is one of the most effective ways to build the automatic recall the MTC requires.

Tips for MTC Practice at Home

⏱️

Practise with a timer

Set a 2.5-minute timer for 25 questions to simulate the real test pace (6 seconds per question).

🎯

Focus on the tricky tables

6×, 7×, 8×, 9× and 12× appear more in the MTC. Generate sheets targeting these specifically.

📅

Little and often beats cramming

10–15 minutes of practice 4–5 times per week builds faster recall than one long session.

📊

Track which tables are hardest

Use The Math Maker's Pro plan to rate topics after each session — future worksheets will automatically weight the harder tables.

🏆

Celebrate improvement

The MTC scores from 0–25. Tracking your child's score over weeks shows real progress and keeps motivation high.

MTC Practice — FAQ

When does the Year 4 MTC take place?

The MTC is administered in the four-week window beginning in the first week of June each year. Schools choose their own exact dates within this window.

Is the MTC compulsory?

Yes, the MTC is a statutory requirement for all state-funded schools in England. Children in Year 4 (ages 8–9) must take it unless they have specific exemptions.

What score should my child be aiming for?

The maximum score is 25/25. There is no official pass mark — the MTC is diagnostic, not a high-stakes exam. Most schools aim for children to score 20 or above. Focus on consistent improvement rather than a single result.

Can I generate more than 25 questions?

The MTC uses exactly 25 questions, so we recommend setting your worksheet to 25 questions when practising. You can also create shorter sessions (10 or 15 questions) for younger children or earlier in the year.

Every worksheet includes

25 MTC-style questions across all 2–12× tables
Separate answer sheet — keep it aside while your child works
Your child's name & date fields at the top
A score box to record their result
Themed illustrations to make it more engaging
Print-ready A4 PDF format
